There is some significant clinical evidence to suggest that consuming high-phenolic olive oil may help reduce the symptoms of arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disorder characterized by chronic inflammation in the joints.
Polyphenols and inflammation
The polyphenols in high-phenolic or medical-grade olive oil have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce joint pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. In addition, the monounsaturated fats in olive oil may also help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which can contribute to the development and progression of arthritis.
Medical-grade olive oil treatment for rheumatoid arthritis
A review of several studies found that consuming a Mediterranean diet, which is rich in polyphenol-rich olive oil, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources, was associated with a reduced risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis and improved symptom management in people who already had the condition.
However, it’s important to note that while high-phenolic olive oil may be very helpful in reducing arthritis symptoms, it should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment. People with arthritis should work with their healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that may include medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise.
